Throughout his years in public service, Mayor Steve Pellegrini has made public safety one of his top priorities.
As Chair of the York Region Police Services Board, Steve helps provide governance and oversight for York Regional Police, working alongside Board members and police leadership to support strategic planning, community safety initiatives, accountability, and responsible policing. His experience gives him a unique understanding of the challenges facing communities across York Region and how municipalities can work together to address them.
Steve has also been a strong advocate for improving public safety through collaboration with municipal, regional, provincial, and federal partners. He understands that creating safer communities requires thoughtful leadership, long-term planning, and a willingness to work across all levels of government.
Supporting Those Who Serve
Public safety depends on many dedicated professionals.
Our first responders—police officers, firefighters, and paramedics—are there when emergencies happen. Second responders, including public works staff, utilities, and municipal operations teams, help restore services and maintain critical infrastructure during and after emergencies. Third responders, such as victim services, mental health professionals, community agencies, and volunteers, help individuals and families recover long after the emergency has ended.
Steve understands that every part of this system matters. Effective leadership means ensuring these organizations have strong partnerships, clear communication, and the support they need to serve residents effectively.

Whether he's attending neighborhood watch meetings, neighborhood events, meeting residents at their doors, or supporting local businesses, he knows that listening to residents and collaboration with York Regional Police service is an important part of keeping King Township safe. Residents are often the first to identify concerns in their neighborhoods, and open communication with local leaders, residents and businesses helps local government and emergency services respond more effectively.
The Value of Neighbourhood Watch
One of the things that makes King Township special is the sense of community. People know their neighbours, look out for one another, and take pride in where they live. Neighborhood Watch programs build on that spirit by encouraging residents to stay connected, be aware of what's happening around them, and report suspicious activity to York Regional Police when necessary.
These programs aren't about being alarmed—they're about being informed. When neighbours communicate and work together, they help deter crime, strengthen community connections, and make everyone feel more secure.
Steve believes that public safety is most effective when it's a partnership. Throughout his time in public office, he has supported practical initiatives that encourage residents to become active participants in keeping their neighbourhoods safe. He helped champion the introduction of the Neighbourhood Watch window sign program, giving participating households a visible way to show their commitment to community safety. He also supported the installation of Neighbourhood Watch road signs at the entrances to participating communities, helping raise awareness and reminding everyone that neighbours are working together to help deter crime.
Steve knows that while signs alone don't prevent crime, they send an important message: this is a community where people know one another, stay alert, and work together. Combined with strong partnerships between residents, York Regional Police, and community organizations, these initiatives help make King Township a safer and more connected place to live.
